The Value of Stamps

Every week I am contacted by people whose loved one had a coin collection - they could use some guidance or an appraisal.

Inevitably the subject of stamps comes up.

Many grandparents or parents who collected coins also collected stamps.

Here are the basics of stamp collecting and their value:

The people in the business will tell you if the stamps are from the 1930s to modern day – lick them and stick them.

4 to 6% of stamp collectors are passing away yearly and their families have no interest.

Nobody wants first day issues. Nobody wants canceled stamps.

With the exception of the best of the best of rare stamps, they are going the way of Hummel and beanie babies.

That doesn’t mean that you should throw everything away, but you should be well prepared for the likelihood that the stamp collection has a little or no value.
