The Art of Negotiation:

When you are at a coin show and ask a dealer the price of something—that is the price. The next step is not to ask him if he can give it to you for less money. It’s for you to make a counteroffer. Usually, a dealer will have some wiggle room, and you can both meet somewhere in the middle.

This usually pertains to coins that are $100 or more. If a dealer is selling circulated Indian cents for a dollar, pay the dollar—please don’t insult him with a counteroffer. You’re not taking into consideration the cost of the show, his setup and travel time, preparation for inventory, and other basic business expenses.

Also, when you are interested in selling something you have, please do not expect retail prices. You cannot expect retail prices based on the information I just gave you. If you want to get a retail price, step around to the other side of the table and become a dealer.
