Items to Avoid as Investment Purchases

After yesterday’s coin show, I was reminded of the following: just because something is deemed a collectible, doesn’t mean it has any significant value. At every show, someone brings to me different items that have minimal value.

Avoid colorized two-dollar bills. The colorization makes them worth face value. Any gold-plated coin. A gold-plated buffalo nickel is worth a nickel. Franklin Mint silver coins will only be worth melt value. They will never have any additional significant value. The fourth example is colorized silver eagles; you will only receive melt value in return.

If you want to overpay for these items and never receive the value of what you invested in but enjoy looking at them—that is fine, but please do it with “eyes wide open.”
